WWW is the acronym for the World Wide Web, which is an information system where resources are identified by URLs. The www has been used in URLs as well for many years. However, when looking at the URL www.example.com the www prefix is in fact a subdomain of the domain example.com. In this article, we will look into the www prefix when using a subdomain with AwardSpace.
How to Create a Subdomain?
Subdomains are easily created via our Domain Manager. If you are not familiar with this process you can check our article about How to register a subdomain. When you create the subdomain the following two hostnames will be created for the subdomain automatically:
mail.sub.domain.com
mx.sub.domain.com
However, unlike registering a domain, our system will not create a hostname with the www prefix for your subdomain(www.sub.domain.com).
WWW on a Subdomain
The www prefix was often used in the past in the URLs for many domains (e.g. www.google.com). However, www was never needed in order to access a specific website. Today many companies decided to drop the www for their websites.
Although the www can be used for subdomains at present the creation of the www hostname for subdomains is not possible for our shared hosting plans. The only place where you would be able to create a subdomain with the www prefix is on a VPS. You can further check our VPS plans here.
