After you have installed Elgg core and logged in to the admin dashboard, you can search for themes that can help you customize your new website.

Elgg themes are a set of files that help you customize the appearance of your website. Via themes, you can modify website colors, fonts, layouts, and content distribution.

The process of installing an Elgg theme is simple and in this article, we share how to do so simply and quickly.

The process is comprised only of a few easy-to-follow steps.

Download the Theme

The first step of the process is to search for a theme that suits your needs. You can browse the Elgg themes/plugins library and filter out the one that best matches your preferences.

Once you select a theme, download it on your computer device.

Extract the Theme

Extract the .zip file on your computer. In most cases, the extracted folder should contain files like start.php, manifest.xml, and possibly folders such as views, graphics, etc.

Upload the Theme to the AwardSpace Server

Use the AwardSpace file manager to upload the theme folder to your server.

The Elgg theme folder should be uploaded to the directory of your Elgg installation.

Activate the Theme

Once you upload the Elgg theme to the AwardSpace server, it is time to activate it.

To do so, log in to your Elgg site as an administrator.

Then, via the admin dashboard, go to Configure->Plugins.

Once there, find the theme you uploaded in the list of plugins.

Enable the theme by toggling it on.

Set the Theme as Default

Once the theme is enabled, you should set it as the default theme on your website.

Via the Elgg dashboard, go to Configure > Settings > Appearance

Choose the newly uploaded theme as your default theme.

(Optional) Clear Cache

To ensure all changes take effect, you might need to clear the Elgg cache.

Go to Administration > Advanced Settings and find the option to clear the cache.

Conclusion

Now you have successfully managed to install an Elgg theme, and can already start customizing your website, so it looks and feels exactly as you wish it to.
