Home » Glossary » Webpage

As most of you probably know a search engine is an internet service that helps users find any information available on the internet. By providing relevant results when users enter search queries. Some examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

In order for users to find the information they are looking for, they can either enter their queries directly into the search engine’s search bar or navigate directly to specific websites if they already know the URL. When accessing a website, users typically come across documents containing the information they seek. These documents are known as web pages or web pages.

What is a Webpage?

A web page (or webpage) is a hypertext document on the World Wide Web (WWW). Web pages are composed of HTML elements and can be displayed on the user’s browser such as Mozilla, Firefox, Chrome, etc.

Web pages are stored on a web server and can be accessed by entering their URL (Uniform Resource Locator). Once the page is loaded it appears on the user’s web browser linked with a unique URL because two pages cannot have the same URL.

As a part of a website, webpages are used to provide information to the user, containing text, links for other pages, graphics, videos, etc.

What is the difference between a Website and a Webpage?

Although websites and webpages are both fundamental components of the World Wide Web, they are different from one another. A webpage is a single web document, while a website is a collection of different web pages that are linked together with hyperlinks.

  • Develop – Website development includes creating multiple web pages, while webpage development involves creating individual pages within that website.
  • Access – Websites are accessed through their unique address also called a domain name. For example, a domain name is “awardpage.com” Once the domain name is entered into the browser usually users are directed to the homepage of the website. From there, they can navigate to different pages within the website. Web pages are accessible through their unique URL which might include some extension indicating the file type (html, php). Users can access web pages directly by entering their URL into a web browser or by navigating within the website.
  • Content – Webpages usually are focused on containing information only about a single topic or task. A website includes multiple web pages that are interconnected and share a common domain name.

What are the types of Web pages?

Based on the functionality of the webpage there are two types, static and dynamic webpage.

Static Webpage

A Static webpage also known as a stationary or flat web page is usually written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Mostly used to provide information to users such as product details, contact information, portfolios, and other static data.

As the name suggests a static webpage is known as stationary because the content and layout of the webpage remain the same for all users. No matter who is viewing the page or when it’s being accessed the page would stay the same.

Also, static web pages cannot be modified or changed by any user. This means that the user cannot perform any operation on the page that would change its content or functionality. However, a webpage’s JavaScript can enter dynamic functionality which might make the static web page dynamic.

Dynamic Webpage

A dynamic web page is a web page that is generated by a web server in real time in response to user requests or input.

Dynamic web pages use web scripting languages such as ASP (Active Server Pages), PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor), Python, Ruby, and others to generate content on the server side. These scripting languages allow developers to create interactive and responsive web applications by generating HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code.

Scripting languages are critical to enabling the dynamic behavior of web pages. They allow developers to create web applications and continuously update their websites to enhance the user experience.

Conclusion

A web page is a hypertext document written in HTML. When multiple web pages are linked together through hyperlinks under a common domain, they allow users to navigate between them seamlessly and collectively form a website. Since web pages are the core components of websites, they have different purposes. From the familiar homepages that serve as the main entry to the website to the specialized landing pages designed to persuade users to take a specific action.
